I try to paint my pictures as realistically as possible which sometimes causes confusion when people think they are computer generated.
I've decided to put a 'story board' together showing how a painting is created.
The picture is to be painted on a boxed canvas 50cms x 70cms.
The first step is to draw the pic.
I find the easiest way to do this is to upload your image onto your computer, resize it to match your canvas size and add a 5cm grid to it. This saves you having to damage the original image.
I then draw a 5cm grid on the canvas and using the computer image as a reference I draw the image.
The image upper left shows the finished drawing after I have rubbed out the grid with a putty rubber.
The next stage is to block in the colours using oil paint diluted with white spirit. I leave the eyes, mouth and ears til later.
The shading on the face and arms is achieved by using a very soft, dry brush to stroke the two differnt colours where they meet. This lets them blend nicely.
Now I have started to add some detail but I stll haven’t taken the plug of cotton wool from her ear.
